Don't Stick A Fork In Detroit's Thanksgiving Day Tradition
Even as some purported fans call for the unthinkable, I'm handing out huge props to Dan Shaughnessy at Sports Illustrated for sticking up for my struggling Lions and their rightful place as a mainstay of the NFL's Thanksgiving Day tradition...
The Lions are Thanksgiving. They are as much a part of the holiday as turkey, stuffing, apple pie and Uncle Don falling asleep on the couch after dessert.
Nobody gets credit for this, nobody gets blame. But the Lions on Thanksgiving are an American institution, like Guy Lombardo and Dick Clark on New Year's Eve. The Lions have been playing on Thanksgiving since Franklin Delano Roosevelt was president (1934).
In fact, Thanksgiving Day football games involving Detroit teams go back even further. From the Detroit Heralds in 1920 to the Lions now, our teams have played perhaps a bigger and more consistent role in growing the Thanksgiving Day tradition than teams in any other big-league city. So all those who'd like to strip the Lions of the privilege of being an ongoing staple of the Turkey Day pro football tradition can just take their big glass of Haterade and sit at the kids' table this holiday.
I'll admit that the football here isn't always the most appetizing -- but neither are some of those Butterballs some of you are going to burn and butcher tomorrow. Still, that doesn't mean you're ready to give up on the tradition, now does it?
If you've got time between bites, share your thoughts on this with the blog. Above all, relax and enjoy your time with your loved ones...

They can't take this away from us - the only time the Lions have ever had a reasonable chance of winning is on Turkey Day. More well thought out commentary from the No Fun League. The Lions on Thanksgiving are as American as Chad Ochocinco and apple pie.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Haterade. Great term

I love to watch the Lions on Thanksgiving, it's tradition, and we don't have to worry about a black-out. Also, I don't mind if the rest of the country wants it gone, it's actually kind of comical. I think of it as payback for the daggers thrown at the city, the auto-industry, and Michigan in general. -

Glad there's only one signature on that petition.
BTW: Loved the Haterade/kids table comment as well.
