Fair-weathered state
The fight to keep the Michigan State Fair funded may be over...for now.
According to a story published on the Crain's Detroit Web site, Gov. Jennifer Granholm vetoed any funding for the annual event.
“To avoid a government shutdown I've now signed the final bills that comprise the Michigan budget. This is the budget we have, but it is not the budget we need,” Granholm said.
Sigh.

They should give the fair grounds to these people. Theatre Bizarre keeps growing bigger and bigger every year...

Well to be honest I have not been to the State Fair since my friends car was stolen from there. We all loaded up in his car and went to have a good time an show support for a Detroit/state tradition and lost a car in the process. Shame too because we all had a great time untill we could not find the car.
But our State in in a bit of a crunch so some things have to be cut, too bad the fair was one of them.

This is really so sad. As I understand it, the Michigan State Fair is the oldest of its kind. There are cuts to education at all levels already. It seems like all the things that go to making society more verdant are losing their funding. In my opinion, it's penny-wise, pound-foolish.

Why not lease out space in the Fairgrounds parking lot for things like a Farmers Market (April- Oct), some large Nurseries (trees shrubs and landscaping materials), and other "outdoorsy" venues to make up the cash reserves needed to keep it open. The same thing can be said for the Hazel Park racetrack.
Keep it cheap enough to interest vendors and customers and you'll get a cashflow going.
Coordinate this so it doesn't conflict with the Fair itself.

Granholm's an idiot. This is a small cost, and brings a lot of joy to people. She said she thinks the land could be "developed", as it anyone's going to start a new development project in that area. it will sit vacant and breed trouble. Has she induced Microsoft or Boeing to move from Washington State?
The state could have have hired Detroit teens to work the fair, and get them off the streets. Have them earn their food stamps, or give them healthy meals there, instead of having so much junk food bought with the Bridge Cards. Or better yet, take the welfare recipients next summer and have them and their working age children earn their checks by working at the fair. Less time to make more babies for welfare!
