Raise a glass
Yes, one more reason to come to Detroit -- and raise a glass to those who still work there every day.
Read this great story at Metro Times about Kovacs bar. It's in trouble, like so many other great watering holes like Bakers Keyboard Lounge.
Then go there. Really, just go.

This isn't really close to downtown. Sits on the edge of Detroit closer to River Rouge. But if it were downtown, I'd probably enjoy an after work drink there now and then. Looks swell.

I second the above comment. The first two sentences of the article indicate that this place is about as far from downtown as you can get and still be in Detroit.
I feel like the real story here is the delay in the DRIC project. The bar owners are ready to retire and they have almost no business anymore. While that's depressing they have an out that a lot of property owners around here don't. The state wants their land!
I haven't been to that area, but the metro times article makes it pretty clear that even if the bridge is never built, this area is not likely to be revitalized. "In every direction around it there's emptiness — barren fields, empty buildings, quiet streets. Crumbling little houses dot the blocks."
Getting the bridge project moving will do two things - let the Evans' retire, and put something far more economically useful (IMHO) in that area.

That building has a gorgeous interior. He may not be able to sell the building for future use where it is, but I'm sure there are many business people in the restaurant and bar trade that would buy the internal fixtures and restaurant/bar items to install them elsewhere. The bar, and area behind it, look like Cheli's downtown.
